Aerogarden for growing herbs

I once wanted an areogarden the look cool, but dont look big enuf to be practical for the average plant hieght wise, so after looking round google with the word "hydroponics" i found this for the bigger plants...

and using normal household flourescent tube lighting you can grow almost any thing.

I got one of these for Christmas - havent even opened the box yet as I thought it was just a bit of a gimmicky thing. Having read the comments here I'll have a good look at it. I think the seeds in it are the herbs packet.
Does it use a lot of electricity??
