I have been looking at buying an Aerogarden, but they seem very expensive
Has anyone got, or used one.
Anybody any ideas where I can get one at a better price, or is there a diy route, I am sure there must be ~ I just want to grow like the cherry toms & stuff like that not on a big scale. There must be something on hydroponics, but I don't know where to start looking.

I'm guessing you've been looking on QVC too?

These really look like the answer to all my problems as I live in a basement flat and have been unsuccessfully trying to grow things since I moved in.

I agree about the price, but it looks like a great system... much less mess than using loads of individual pots too... I think I'd be tempted to just shell out the full whack for one, once its paid for it should just go on and on

My only other concern is the electricity consumption

That makes a change QVC being cheaper, I always find prices online cheaper than QVC

DIY option = Fishtank with lid and a growlux tube.
Look on Freecycle you often seem them on their for free.

I use this method to grow on tissue cultured plants and it works well.

alanobrien, that sounds like an interesting idea

I assume you use the pump to circulate air around the plants?

I use a fan if necessary (and rarely), generally if its to hot rather than to cold.

Just managed to find this thread again. I will certainly be giving the fish tank idea a go.

FYI, regarding lighting, i now use a couple of low energy full spectrum bulbs (6400k) instead of the growlux tube. They give better colour spectrum and are cheaper to run.
These bulbs can be quite costly but I found a low cost supplier on ebay. PM me if you want their details.

I dont quite understand this setup... how is the fishtank ventilated?

or do you leave the lid off and suspend the bulbs across the top somehow?
