I feel you have been unlucky. Normally cheques over £1000 are manually checked - whether it is a digital copy or  the original.

They did take the funds from you within timescales so no complaint can be made.

Get the drawer to transfer the funds to you?
But before they reversed it my account had been credited with the money which I had spent before it was reversed. I have asked for another cheque ( the drawer is not comfortable with on-line transfers).

Sorry to say but you have no case here - you spent the money before it had fully cleared.

I don't think the colour of the ink has anything to do with it - all the copies I get of cheques paid in digitally are in black and white. It was probably the different style of writing the payee. From the bank's point of view you could have rubbed out the original payee name and entered your own (I know you didn't but they are on the hook for £850 if it was fraud).

Please ask them to fully write out any future cheque - it might be worth for them to advise their bank that a duplicate cheque is due to be issued.

I think the advice that they gave me when I paid in the cheque was to wait for it to clear. I did this. So I do think I have a case, they didn't advise me to wait another day. But thank you, Jon.

How did they know the payee was originally blank?
