Hi All
this july i am looking at doing the below route
12th July fly into LA with virgin, i was going to do 5 nights in la but was wondering if anyone could give me advice, my next destination is san francisco and was wondering if i cut a night off la and drove down to san francisco and stayed somewhere on the way, ive heard it is about 7 or 8 hours via highway 1 (scenic route) to san fran which is fine if i had somewhere to stay in a hotel inbetween, i fancy san diego so can anyone tell me if it is on the way, if not is there anywhere nice on the way.
my destination is then off to las vegas from san fran but have heard it will take a whole day to drive there so if this is correct i will get an internal flight and then spend 6 or 7 nights in vegas and then fly home with virgin
any help would be most greatful
thanks simon
we did Highway 1 the other way - down from SF to LA and stopped twice - did one night in Monteray Bay (wonderful) and 2 nights in San Simeon (right next to the ocean). Loads of vineyards etc around San Simeon. I don't see that as being an 8 hour drive - probably more like 12. Some parts of the road are twisty and turny and about 20mph tops.
Only spent about an hour or so in LA (Hollywood sign) before driving through the desert (with more stop offs) to Vegas.
That loop (including Yosemite on the way back to SF) took us 2 weeks and 2000ish miles.
I'm a driver though, so all the driving was great for me!
PS - I think San Diego is south of LA where SF is quite a lot north. I agree with Murphy - look at some maps!

& that is a REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT THING that a lot of people come unstuck on. California is huge !!!! and you can soon find yourself doing mammoth distances to make sure that you get to see all that you want to see. Some good advice that I keep seeing reposted again and again on another road trip forum is that you should consider cutting down on your trip a bit to make sure that you get to actually see what you want to see (rather than spending all day in the saddle), or if possible, extend your holiday slightly and set a slower pace.
& just for the record, I'm like brazilianwax, I love driving as well :j0
