House Insurance (Buildings) - dependent relative

Options
Hi

I need advice please with house insurance as I am being messed about by my broker.

I have a dependent relative mortgage and my relative lives in my property paying no rent. I live elsewhere.

I have property owners buildings insurance. My broker has queried if I am under insured as they are reviewing all renewals as it has 'moved team'. I have taken this opportunity to question them back as my renewal looked like a standard landlord/tenant one which included loss of rent - I asked that the insurer is clear on the situation re dependent relative and no rent and all this information has been 'lost/never been logged'.

When I ask in writing that the insurer now know about and are happy with the situation I am not really getting answers but more confusion.  The latest is 'as there is no rent, we feel this risk would be better suited under a private home insurance policy'.

Does anyone have any advice as to what insurance I need and what, if any, agreement I need with my relative?

(The relative sort the contents btw).

Many thanks

It comes up often and there is no clear answer.

Normal Home insurance typically requires that the insured property is your main residence however there are plenty of stories of people being guided to buy Home or Landlords. Others give their relative a contract that states they are responsible for maintenance and insuring of the building in exchange for being able to live there which in principle gives them an insurable interest so they can insure the building themselves.
