TV hasn't been bought yet, but the owner would ideally want it running only by WiFi, as they didn't make a provision to have cables available to it (wall mounted).
There's new Freely, which sounds ideal, but is limited to certain TV models - Hisense and Bush, for example. Then there's Freeview Play, but true 'live' still needs an aerial, tho' you can always get the progs via the individual 'players.
Anything else? Pros and cons? Experience? Thoughts?
TV use will tend to be specific - sports, news, and suchlike, and not a TV that'll be 'on' that much.
Cheers.

Any Fire TV will run the usual apps (BBC iPlayer etc)1

What is the question?1

Vitor said:What is the question?Oops! What WiFi-only setup can best replicate a normal 'Terrestrial' TV?Ie - with a WiFi-only feed, how to have the 'live' TV as normal; ie, you turn it on, and it shows 'terrestrial' channels, as if from an antenna. Then, of course, all the players and catch-ups will be there via Apps as required.Freely seemingly does this, but it's limited to a few makes on tele.0

If they plan on running via WiFi only they will require a suitably fast and stable signal from the router which should ideally be within line of sight of the TV.
As they have limited their options by not including a cable run to the TV as you've said, Freely is a good option.1 -
Nothing yet will replicate perfectly via Wi-Fi only. I tried freeview play once but it was sooooo slow it was unusable. This was likely the cheap TV software though. You need to spend a lot of money on a TV with a good, fast processor to even get anything near smooth transition between channels. However, we don't have aerial's on either of our TVs and just use a fire stick to watch the telly programmed on the appropriate App1

TVs based on Google TV are slowly gaining a 'Channels' UI which aims to replicate flicking through channels on a TV receiving over-the-air broadcasts but it's not quite there yet - Google TV's new free 'Channels' update in the UK makes it easier to drop the aerial – with one big problem | TechRadar1

We made the mistake of thinking that we could get ordinary terrestrial TV over the internet and didn't have a cable installed when we built our new garden room. OH refuses to have a cable added retrospectively as he doesn't want wires running across the render. As a consequence we are using a Firestick, which is OK up to a point, but clunky and time consuming changing between BBC/ITV/C4 etcMake £2025 in 2025

That's all terrific info, thank you.I can confirm that a mains socket was mounted on the chimney breast for the TV, but no facility to route additional cables. The cove was keen on the Samsung Frame sets, but I've had it confirmed that these must use their 'one' box, so that will require their - admittedly clever - single silvery cable connections to the TV. Problem is, even that's ugly, and there's no place to position the 'box' - there's a refurb'd Viccie fireplace underneath, and now't to the sides. The owner is keen to have 'paintings' displayed when not on as it'll have a prominent position on the feature wall, just above the fireplace. So, I've suggested that 'all' that's needed is a 'normal' TV but which is slimmish - say up to 50mm - and has a matte or anti-glare screen. Then his amazing builder can add a proper timber picture frame if he really wants. As to Firesticks et al, it doesn't matter too much how slow they are to respond, as long as they display a stable pic once running.Freely sounds good, but the best make - Hisense - doesn't seem to have one with their 'anti' screen.Lawdie....0
