Council Tax SMI Discount

Following a severe stroke some months ago we read that my husband could apply for council tax discount.

we got the forms from the council. We provided proof that he gets Attendance Allowance and dropped the form in to our Health Centre.  He wrote back saying the form relates to severe mental impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. He says my husband’s stroke would not fit that definition.

Stroke is listed as one of the criteria.

As well as all the physical problems, my husband gets confused, gets very emotional and upset, has been suicidal for several months and is now on anti depressants, he gets fatigued and his speech deteriorates, dysarthria.

I am not sure the GP understands the form but I would have thought a haemorrhagic stroke which was what he had has impaired his brain without question.

Any suggestions as to what I should do next please?

I think it's more about cognitive function and needs to be permanent. I think it ultimately it's at the discretion of the GP. I guess you could ask for a second opinion from another GP?

Your gp does not consider your husband qualifies .

Does the gp know the extent if his disability?

Just having a stroke does not necessarily mean  he is eligible.

Could you arrange an appointment with gp for both of you to attend and discuss the matter?
