Anyone good with illustrator CS3

I'm writing some vertical text on illustrator e.g:

l
l
o


My question is: How do you get rid of spaces between each letter? Sorry it's kind of difficult to explain but if anyone knows what i'm talking about please reply

im not sure if its the same as photoshop, but photoshop in the character box its got like

IA
except the I is a double sided arrow,

Thanks for replying but that doesn't make enough difference. I remember somebody mentioning align from the window menu but when I try aligning it nothing happens.

have you tried using negitive numbers with this?

usually it will put the letters a lot closer when the number are negitive

With the text button clicked if you press I think ctrl and T it brings up the text options there you can adjust the spacing between the letters

I gather you are using the vertical text tool rather than hard returns between letters?

If so go to character option while on the text tool (up on the top toolbar on mac) and set the tracking to reduce the space between characters.

Leading is the space between the lines - and what you need to adjust. Tracking is the space between letters in a word/selection (normally as a percentage). Kerning is the specific space between two letters eg. AV
