I inadvertently drove into a part-time pedestrian area in an area I'm unfamiliar with. The only traffic sign is literally broken - it has a big crack down the middle. See:

I approached down the main road, at right angles to the sign, so the crack made it really difficult to decipher.
The fine is £80, if paid immediately. Should I just pay it, or would I be likely to succeed on appeal?
Thanks for your help.
