Home insurance comparison sites.

Options

Every year it is a nightmare getting a new quote for our home insurance. Comparison sites including the MSE one do not find home insurance that is suitable for a lot of people. The majority of quotes I get come up with 1 mil for the buildings and 100 thousand for the contents which is about right for me but when you check the small print you find that the garage, outbuildings, shed and garden contents are woefully inadequate usually £5000 for contents and 1000 for garden. One of my mowers alone would cost 10,000 to replace and then there's all my tools etc. My garden furniture alone cost 2000 and is nothing that fancy. I am insured with M&S at the moment which has trebled over the last 4 years but are still the cheapest I can find. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives but it's like finding a needle in a haystack as you only get to find out you would not be covered at the end of the process.

Price comparison sites are designed for the 95% who care only about price and not quality of cover. They are an utter pain to use if you have a notable amount of content given the requirement to declare anything over £1,000 -v- things like M&S Premier where you are declaring only valuables (in the traditional sense, not laptops etc) over £15,000

NFU is an obvious choice, your next step up however is into the poorly serviced MNW or the much better serviced HNW with the likes of Hiscox, Chubb etc but their premiums are for people who arent price sensitive. Most of these are sold by brokers but there are a few direct providers in the market.

Thank you Voyager for being so helpful and presumptuous, although I'm not poor I am also very much not wealthy and everything I have has come through hard work on low wages over the last 50 years. I have managed to save and invest in our futures by extreme thrift to the point of growing my own food, fixing my car and every other thing that breaks, no holidays until recently. Anyone can do it but few have the perseverance. I always tell people to do the maths and add up all the little things people buy that they don't actually really need and work out what you would have in 20 or 50 years time. Things that cost you money mostly don't bring you happiness but there are exceptions, buying your own house is one, having the security that money in the bank gives me peace of mind and my family and grandchildren bring me the most happiness.
