Can I claim on my travel insurance?

Options
I'm due to go on holiday in 2 weeks with my partner.  My partner booked the joint holiday but we have separate travel insurance as we don't live together.
yesterday my partners mum was taken to hospital and she's been diagnosed with a brain tumour.  Obviously we don't know how bad yet but as her health only changed in the last 2 weeks and now she's in hospital waiting for the next step in whatever treatment I'm sure my partner will want to cancel the holiday.
i know he will be covered on his travel insurance but I was wondering if I am?
I know you are covered if a close relative including parent in law falls ill on my insurance but as I don't live with my partner even though we've been together years will that count?
Thanks for any help

The devil will be in the detail, there is no single answer, you need to read your policy documents.

It varies from policy to policy - you'll need to dig out the documentation, as we don't even know which company you're insured with.
Have a good look through the documents, and if you're unsure post the wording and we'll decipher it.

Good luck to your partner's mum with her health and treatment too, of course.

I don't believe they will and depending on the reason for the illness, they will only cover your partner.

Phone and ask as often the contract is long and many exclusions etc.

Next time even if you book separately, seek advice from the ins co before going ahead with the purchase.

    We went on
hols a few weeks ago - this was the first hols without any other family - one of children often bought the hols/tickets/ins and more recently we went together and did sperate tickets/teavel but same dates and IIRC, something called 'group insurance' BUT ask the insurance co if it meets your needes

Thanks I'm struggling to make heads or tails of it.  I have an annual policy through cover wise but it's through axa .

    What I've found so far

    What is covered

    CANCELLATION OR CURTAILMENT

Up to £2,000 for your proportion of any irrecoverable unused travel and accommodation costs and pre-paid charges that you have paid or are contracted to pay, because of one or more of the specific perils listed within your policy.

    Not covered

    CANCELLATION OR CURTAILMENT

& Any claim where you cannot travel or choose not to travel because the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), or any other equivalent government body in another country, advises against travel due to a pandemic.

Claims caused by a third party, where their health status at the time of the insurance purchase, or trip booking date could reasonably be expected to result in a claim (see important conditions relating to health for full details).

Policy Coverage: This insurance policy is designed to protect you against specific situations or losses that result from sudden and unexpected conditions or events that occur after the inception of the policy. No insurance coverage is provided for events that were expected at the time of booking your trip and/or  insurance

    Then it lists definitions

    Close relative

    - Means mother, father, sister, brother, wife, husband, civil partner, daughter, son, grandparent, grandchild, parent-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, step parent, step child, step sister, step brother, foster child, legal guardian, domestic partner or fiancé/fiancée.

    So I'm non the wiser

As above, best call your insurer, they'll give you a definitive answer once you've explained the circumstances.

Thanks, it was my first trip abroad in 50 years so if I ever get the chance to go again I'll definitely research more and ask.

I understand as we had loads of problems getting travel ins ie me and my spouse becuse of medicals.
The ins staff chat so quickly it is easy to miss stuff.  At one time I luckily picked up up the fact they I was not going to be covered for any of my medicals, I thankfully asked him to repeated what he said and it was something like.  "that great you are both now covered and you too are covered for everthing thing but not you medical..."  He was speaking so dfast I'm glad I was asking him to repeat. So when i then my OH we medical, intial medical investiagtions free and could get full cover we went on hols. We could not book on line.  I made sure we did our best to tell them of every single of the many doc/gp/hospital visits etc.  Then look at the paperwork they send and often it will state what is covered and not.

It was daunting but we loved the hols - even our kids were worried as it was the first time ever we went abroad without any of them, lol.

We all learn from experiences, and I hope you are able to recover your money and that your OH's mum gets better soon.

I don't think pre-existing medical issues are a factor in the OP's post.
Can only hope the "mother in law" recovers.

Irrelevant. My post was just a general heads-up about taking out travel insurance and being aware of some of the questions to ask, look out for as clearly detailed in my post.

As per my previous posts her, I too was confused re travel insurance and the speed some of them talk and almost missed a vital point, IE medicals not covered....

The gent has not been abroad for "50 years"!
