Over 70s Driving Licence Renewal Problem

Hi.
I recently got a driving Licence renewal letter and have been attempting to complete the renewal through the dot gov website.
After completing the online form, I was unable to continue with my ID verification using the website.
I then downloaded the identity check app and scanned my passport to verify my photo.
Unfortunately that didn't work either.
Really people should be able to go to any government department on line, but apparently you can't.
It's going to mean a trip to the Post Offce.

Has anybody else had this problem?
Regards

Phill (Merseyside UK)

Why did you have t scan your passport?

when I’ve done this (twice so far) I simply gave my passport number.

    a bit of a hijack.....

What's the alternative to a UK passport for this?  The only photo ID I have from the UK is my driver's licence.

It sounds like the same web site you're supposed to use to verify your ID as a company director.  It's broken, and doesn't work for some people.  Including me.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Such as?

They can't check against non-UK passports.

Most people here only have driving licence and passport as government-issued ID.

My OH experienced the same problem, the DVLA site either couldn’t retrieve the passport photo, or match it to the driving licence photo.

She is having to obtain a photo from a booth and submit a postal application… really annoying as the passport is only about a year old.

I don't have a valid passport and for last year's renewal I had to do the same, submit a postal application after going to a photo booth, attaching the picture to the application and posting it. My expiring licence had to be returned too.
The picture on the expiring licence must have been a good enough likeness to the booth picture. Unlike a passport photo, the booth picture didn't need verifying which would have added more cost.
Previous renewals have been completed online without requiring a passport.
As has been said, most people only have a passport and driving licence for photo i/d. I only have the one, my licence.
However, the new licence was received by me in less than 7 days.

I had a similar problem (<70 renewal of photo card) and once I had spent a frustrating afternoon trying to get round the issue I popped down to the PO (not that local, you need to check which ones in your area can do it).  It was breeze they took the photo filled everything in online and I had a new licence in a couple of days.

Don't sweat iot take your docs and pop down to the Post Office.

There was a problem highlighted a while ago  with the DVLA unable to verify passports issued since 2016 as they do not have a digital signature on them.

My passport was issued in 2019 and my 70+ licence was issued in 2023. It worked fine, entirely “on line”
