Electricity meter readings are 20x higher than average and I don't know why

Can you explain who has this suspicion (other than you), and how is it that a water pump (or, indeed, any single item that uses electricity) could "completely screw up a smart meter"?brianposter said:Qyburn said:
Do you means actually damage the meter or its function? Or you mean consume a large amount of electricity, which is correctly metered?brianposter said:Water pumps are worth mentioning because there is a suspicion that a faulty pump can completely screw up a smart meter.
It is only a suspicion but what I mean is that the meter may start to produce inconsistent and illogical readings. Experience with a fault in my house which may, or may not, have been caused by a faulty water pump.
Hint: the smart meter does not know which item is using the energy. Any link to you meter fault and your water pump fault is entirely coincidental, and suggesting that water pumps in general may cause an smart meter issue is not helpful to the OP.
I suspect that practical experience is of more functional use than theoretical knowledge and I do not know how smart meters work. However any fault that can interfere with the AC sine wave may well have unexpected results on a smart meter.0 -
How do you reach that conclusion, given you don't know how meters work?brianposter said:

You do not need to know everything in order to know something. UK smart meters are designed to measure 50 Hz..0

Can you elaborate Brian? There’s people here who will be able to understand the technicalities, but even for those of us who may not, if this is actually something that can happen, it would be helpful to know a bit more. If you could lay out the detail, then we (the less techy ones!) can ask for a translation on the stuff we’re not clear about? How does what you’re describing come to happen, and how does it manifest itself? I assume there have been case studies on it - referencing those is a good way of letting people read fact rather than just stating what comes across as opinion.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Yes and if it strays too far either side your connection and probably everyone on the sub-statiowill be dropped, can’t measure anything if no power.brianposter said:You do not need to know everything in order to know something. It is an opinion (because our supplier refused to investigate). If you get very strange readings on your smart meter consider a faulty pump (and a faulty light bulb as appears in BooJewels thread).0 -
Also consider you might have aliens living in your loft tapping into your electric to charge their space ship. Probably as plausible.0

Suspected as much - probably best to make it clear that it’s rather more guesswork than science if you’re going to state it on the internet then - otherwise people will think you’re trying to start a conspiracy theory. There was a good reason that your supplier refused to investigate - I suspect they would have refused to investigate Bendo’s aliens theory too… 😉brianposter said:EssexHebridean said:Can you elaborate Brian? The supplier ended up having to pay compensation and the costs of a court case.0 -
On what basis was that decision reached? Presumably not upholding your theory about the meter, as if so, there would indeed be expert testimony you could present?brianposter said:EssexHebridean said:
