Travel insurance underwriter

When choosing travel insurance how important are the underwriters When selecting which is the best policy.  Presumably it is  the underwriters that would pay out on any claim.

It's more complex than that... there will be an ultimate insurer(s) who are the ones that have the financial liability to you however there can be intermediaries who are actually the ones underwriting the policy. Similarly depending on the arrangements between the parties it may be an intermediary or even the seller that actually handles your claim and makes payment.

So it kinds of depends on what you mean and what you are wanting to achieve... if its checking the financial viability then yes the ultimate insurer is who you look at. If its checking what the claims experience is going to be like then its not necessarily them.

Most of the insurers top of the comparison list are companies I have not heard of. Have limited choice as have lots of pre existing medical conditions.  Not expecting to claim but the ease of claiming is important.  One is backed by AXA which is  a company I have heard of but not sure if I am putting too much weight on this, hence reason for original post

AllClear is one often recommended for those with pre-existing conditions and they are underwritten by Zurich who you have likely heard of? On the basis of all complaints going to AllClear however it's likely Zurich are just providing the backstop financially and you will deal with AllClear for claims etc.
