British gas overcharging

Help- I have been with british gas for several years, I recently had solar panels fitted so decided to switch to Octopus energy.  My BG statement online have always shown that I am in credit,so much so they reduced my monthly payments in January to £27.27, I have a smart metre and noticed that my readings online had an E so I contacted BG who asked me to submit a meter reading which I did, they came back saying it was lower than they expected and could I send a photo of the reading, which I did, my account still showed a credit of over £500. My last bill was in March 2025 and showed a credit of £478.73, I have just had my final bill from BG and it says I am in debit of £1632.95, I can not work out how I now owe them this amount of money.  What do I need to do to dispute this?

You need to go back to BG and ask for a breakdown of the usage according to the readings.  The only readings that matter here are the actual ones, and if you haven't been submitting readings or checking the estimated readings they've been putting on your bills and the actual readings show that you do owe that amount, then unless it's a particularly old debt, you owe it.  They'd have to agree to some sort of reasonable payment plan if you needed it.

First thing to do is to check that you/they have recorded the actual readings correctly, making sure any leading zeroes, etc. are correct.

Can you post the actual readings from your bill, with dates, and kWh usage.

Can you read your meter for us please -   modern meters can be difficult to read, watch out for the decimal point
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Does the end reading that BG is using match the start reading that Octopus is using?
