It is is a VW Golf R.
    Standard, extras fitted.
I can't say for sure that it was over 40k list, but I would say it's likely

I'd say they need to take the hit on it and their weasel contract can't let them wriggle out. Stick to your guns, be prepared to escalate it as a complaint etc.

Did you source the vehicle through a main VW dealer or directly via the leasing company?

Have you asked VW for the list price on the relevant date? There is no reason for them not to tell you.

I haven't purely because I don't know when the vehicle was actually purchased. It is a 23 plate and was brand new, but it may have been purchased as soon as that plate came out, or it maybe have been purchased prior and then registered with the newer plate.

You can get the date (or at least the month) of first registration on gov.uk.

A 2023 VW Golf R had an rrp of at least £45,835

It's never going to be under £40,000

It's very easy to check if any vehicle is affected by the VED premium. Just put the registration into https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk

If it is, there will be an entry at the end:
    "Additional Rate applicable until:"

Putting in the reg of a random 23-plate Golf R found on google images, it is applicable.
