Nissan Qashqai cat s and n write off and wrong vin on car check???
Hi Everyone I hope someone can help , I have paid deposit on the above car and due to pay balance today , but have now found it has been a cat n in 2023 and a cat s last year, but what also came up on car check was a wrong vin and I cant find the plate on this car !
Can someone tell me please how to go about asking this seller{ he is a private car dealer} does he know if the work has been done and also why he didnt tell me ?
Also his name is not the one on logbook so he obviously bought it to sell on , does he have to show me the repair has been done?
The service book states "Major " additional work carried out but doesnt correspond with the cat s or specify what the work was .
Can anyone help /advise me please as I am a lady pensioner and cant afford to get ripped off !
Thank you

RUN AWAY. If you end up losing your deposit, that's getting off lucky. But obvs push to get it back - there's more than enough grounds here to back out of it.
There's oodles of Qashqais out there, find another. One that hasn't been written off twice, and doesn't have a suspicious ID.
Traders names aren't on the V5C, though. When somebody sells a car to a trader, it gets put into an "in trade" status at DVLA, rather than add another keeper.5 -
What’s attracting you to this particular car that’s making you ignore all the red flags - especially not being able to find a VIN plate 😱1

If he's a private seller then there are no obligations to offer up any information but they have to answer questions honestly to the best of their knowledge. There are plenty that buy cars without running checks and so not unusual for them to not know what happened to the vehicle before they owned it.
If he's a dealer, small or large, then he has a much greater duty of disclosure and should have investigated the vehicle and its history to a professional level. Its still not perfect as they dont have access to a magic db that contains every touch up job done or every car thats ever been a taxi or hire car but they can't get out of things just by saying the seller hadn't told them.
A cat S without documentation of the work to restore the structural integrity isnt something I would be buying unless it was a project (not going to speculate if a lady pensioner has a hobby in car repairs or not)2 -
I'm not sure what to make of the "wrong VIN" issue. You say you can't find it on the car. Typically its in at least 3 obvious places (corner of windscreen, sticker/plate under the bonnet, stamping on a panel or chassis leg under the bonnet, sticker/plate in the door recess). Are all these missing or show different VINs? Additionally there's the VIN on the V5 and the VIN is tied to the plate by DVLA (which might be different to the V5 presented, if a false or out of date V5 is presented).
Is it simply the case that you can't find it, the car check was done on the plate and its had a private plate so that doesn't link to this car properly?
Or more?
In any case, these are questions for the seller to resolve for you.1 -

The VIN should be in three places on these.
In the bottom corner of the windscreen.
On a sticker on the B pillar.
(these two are easier to fiddle with)
Stamped into the metal of the car on the bulkhead.
Depending on model, the last one is usually accessed by opening the bonnet and opening a panel at the back of the engine bay, through the scuttle.
Where is the VIN number of my Nissan Qashqai I ( 2007 – 2013 ) | All Possible VIN Number Locations
Where is the VIN number of my Nissan Qashqai II ( 2014 – 2021 ) | All Possible VIN Number Locations
The latest Qashqai I think it's under the front seat somewhere.0 -
What do you mean by "a wrong VIN"?You type the VIN into carcheck and it gives you the history against that VIN, so how can it be wrong? Now it is perfectly possible for there to be a typing error in the VIN on the V5, which someone should have noticed every year because they type the VIN from the car in at MOT and if it doesn't match a V5 record it will flag an error (and there is an option to continue if it is obviously a typographical error). An obvious typographical error is easy to correct.I wouldn't go through with buying that car.......I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Thank you all for replies , he is a dealer but sells all his cars from his houseI
He also knew about the bad dpf filter I found out yesterday he took it before I gave him deposit to get it cleaned but for whatever reason they didnt do it?
I dont think he will give me my money back so what can I do now as he will be coming for it today and I have paid for new part to be fitted to solve the problem of the smoking .
When I rang him just a few mins after giving him deposit on the car {when it was chucking out so much smoke you couldnt see the cars behind, } he said he thought was dpf filter but he already knew as he had tried to get it cleaned a month before!
I really cant afford to lose £ 800 but what else can I do please advice as dont want this to blow up into trouble .
Thank you0 -
I would get in touch with your Citizens Advice Bureau. Did you pay your deposit with a credit card?0
