I’ve been told I may need one to get home/building insurance?

No insurer I've ever come across has ever asked for a survey before insuring a home... it's different if you are trying to insure a £27m block of flats.

Do you have money available to deal with any ‘surprises’ that you find when you move in?

We have never bothered surveying any of the houses we have bought.

The surveyor can't see anything that we can't see and their reports are not worth the paper they are written on with all the get out clauses and caveats.

This place I bought without a survey but only a small bungalow. But it had been built 20yrs so faults might show.
I did an inspection myself and I'm old and clueless but looked for cracks inside and out and got in the loft to look at condition.also used a spirit level on each window sill and checked windows behind curtains.

I looked in the loft of each place on my list. It was unpopular with the agents but a good clean well lined and insulated up there where it doesn't show shows care for the rest imo.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
