Buying from a Mail Dealership for Van

I've paid a deposit for a van I'm buying - I plan to pay the rest when I pick it up - or the day before.
I was going to do a bank transfer rather than a card payment ( due to the amount ) but does it make any difference if I have to claim back the money at a later date if anything goes wrong and the dealership are unhelpful?
Thanks

Is the van exclusively for personal use or part business too?0 -
If you pay by bank transfer there is no way to reclaim your money should things go wrong. You only have some rights if you pay be card preferably a credit card.DE_612183 said:I've paid a deposit for a van I'm buying - I plan to pay the rest when I pick it up - or the day before.

You reclaim it from the merchant if things go wrong and ultimately go to court if they refuse. Sure your bank can't help you but millions of bills are paid by bank transfers.marcia_ said:

Credit Card will only help more than a debit card if it's a personal transaction. If you are buying a van for work then the consumer credit act may not apply.
Yes with any card for personal or business purposes you may have access to a chargeback, though this isnt a right, but getting a £300 deposit back off of a £30,000 purchase is not material protection.1 -

If you want s75 protection you need to pay at least part of the purchase price by credit card. Can't you do that?
What is the price of the van?0 -
I have bought cars on a debit card before, and never had any problem. It's the usual chip+pin process. At least that would give you a chargeback option, if the problem was such that you're eligible for a chargeback. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

I have as well in the past, but these days many dealers won't process a card payment for more than a deposit, so if a debit card is used the only chargeback would be for the value of the deposit, rather than the whole cost through S75 if a credit card is used (assuming it's less than £30K).1 -
In which case the bank is only on the line for the amount paid by card and only in a limited number of circumstances, for example a fault that develops after you buy the vehicle isnt going to be covered, and a limited timescale.DE_612183 said:

If you were to pay the rest by card then you'd have the limited protection for the full amount but if you want to make your bank liable for any problems you'd need to make at least a token payment by credit card.
Many won't accept cards for the full amount, though some will. Chargeback is very limited in scope and timescales compared to S75 so better than nothing but not great.Ectophile said:I have bought cars on a debit card before, and never had any problem.
