It's possible to receive both Carers Allowance and Carers Element (UC).

You qualify for Carers Element because you care for hubby and hubby himself gets a qualifying benefit such as PIP.

    Yes this is correct 😊
  • Thank you , I thought it was a mistake as we didn’t get anything extra for me being a carer when he was on the old style ESA so didn’t occur to me that we would on UC .
  • I believe the carers allowance will be deducted from your UC payment as 'unearned income' so financially,  you'll see no difference overall

  • Yes they have taken £360 of our award as well because of me claiming carers allowance but have given £200 as a carer element which has confused me .

Sounds right but as above the Carer's Allowance amount you continue to receive should be deducted from UC payments (at a calculated monthly amount to fit with UC monthly payments) as unearned income.

(Similar would be true if your partner has an underlying entitlement to Contributions based ESA and that goes into payment - it too would be deducted if relevant)

Carers Allowance and Universal Credit are both income replacement benefits.

Under the welfare system a person is entitled to one income replacement benefit, hence Carers Allowance being deducted in full from your UC award.

Universal Credit is a benefit made up of different elements. Carers Element is one of those.
With UC entitlements are added up before any deductions are made. Carers Element is one of those entitlements same as Housing Element or Standard Allowance.
