Digital Voice

Options
Hi Guys,

I have BT/EE coming next week to my home to change me to digital voice for my landline and internet.

I now use a laptop PC, and desktop PC, Sky Q, Alexa and my mobile wi fi.

EE have sent me a new Hub  and Home phone adapter. An engineer is coming in a few days.

Am I right in saying the Sky Q, laptop Whatsapp and mobile Wi fi will all work on the new system in the same way as they do now?

However, what will happen with the Desktop computer.  It is approx 20 feet away from where the hub will be and at the moment works on a powerline adapter.  Will this powerline adapter still work, or do I have to look for other solutions?

Thanks for anyones help

You can minimise disruption by setting the WiFi SSID and password on the new hub to be same as current router so devices will reconnect without any faffing about.

Will this powerline adapter still work -

Should so, do long as the new hub has RJ45 ports to plug the sender unit into.

The only thing that will be different is the place where you connect your telephone handset.

The new router will have a different WiFi SSID so if you keep that all WiFi devices will need connecting to that with the appropriate WiFi password.

Alternatively, log into the new hub's interface and change the SSID and password to match that of your current router and all devices should reconnect to the new router once the engineer has done his/her bit.

    Thanks for replies.

I am a bit concerned about the desk top PC as it is in another room and currently connects to the internet using a Powerline adapter and works well.

I googled if it will work ok with digital voice, and got negative results. If it does not work, then I am a bit stuck for ideas as I can't move the Desktop PC nearer to where the router is, and will have to find another way to connect to the internet.

The change to telephony will have absolutely NO EFFECT on your powerline adapters, they just connect to the new router in exactly the same way as they do now.

No idea where you have found anything different.

I agree, should work fine unless a numpty has plugged the sender into the hub's WAN port. Once it's installed, I'd restart the PC so it get's a new IP address allocated from the hub.

Digital Voice is a service on your broadband connection rather than your broadband connection being a service on Digital Voice.

So you probably asked the wrong question  - if you asked if powerline adapters worked with digital voice then  the answer really should have been yes because the hub carries both digital voice AND your broadband/internet connection.

But had you asked whether the powerline adapters would work with the new hub then the answer would have been yes.

A pure Digital Voice service probably wont have the capacity to provide a broadband service (although I dont know whether that option exists yet)

I had powerline adapters for my desktop PC, 2 TVs and the Sky Q box on the old FTTC Connection as the wireless connection was a bit flakey .
After the Openreach engineer had finished installing my new "full" fibre service ,he connected the router and tested the wireless. I then connected my existing powerline set up via an ethernet port and it all worked immediately!

    Hi Guys.

The powerline adapter works fine. Thanks for your help.

    Another question,

The install to full fibre took place on Thursday 26th June.

I used to check my speed occasionally on the old hub and used to get approx 40mbps.  I check it using Ookla.

I was told speeds would go up to 900mbps when I did the deal, and I now have a Smart Hub Plus.  Although everything is working fine, when I do a speedtest now I get between 28 to 50 mbps.

I rang EE on Friday and they said we only guarantee up to your wall, it may be your laptop.  (I use a couple of laptops and a desktop PC).  They said to let it settle.

Does this sound right?  Should I get better speeds now? If I ring again, should I complain as 50 is nowhere near what I thought I would get speedwise.

Also, the phone now plugs into the back of the hub, which is what I expected.  I just checked the old copper phone port, and it is still working.  I thought EE turned that off?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Andy

If you log into the router interface what does it show as the connected incoming speed?

To get a truly indicative speed test result you need to connect a computer directly to the router with a LAN (Ethernet) cable and that computer must have a 1 Gigabit LAN adapter.

If you are checking over WiFi, then test on the 5 GHz band and once again the device needs to have a WiFi 5 or 6 internal adapter and in line of sight to the router.

Powerline adapters may be limited to 100 Mbps, you need to check their specification too.

Sorry, there are a lot of variables.

Edit : Full FTTP does not have a "settling" period.
