up to 8% now. And this ontop of Stamp duty that would be due on a 2nd home? Anyone with much experience dabbling in the Scottish market?

Went up last December, not now, and no, it isn't "on top of stamp duty that would be due on a 2nd home", it is the "stamp duty" due on a 2nd home. You pay LBTT in Scotland, not SDLT.
(also you've posted this on the Mortgages board, but it isn't really a mortgage-related point. General property-buying stuff is more usefully put here).1 -

8% addition LBTT is added to LBTT duebelow:
Tax Band Normal Rate Additional Dwelling * less than £145k 0% 8%** £145k to £250k 2% 10% £250k to £325k 5% 13% £325k to £750k 10% 18% rest over £750k 12% 20%
