European car breakdown cover - what do you do?

Hi all. We're going on a holiday to Europe by car. We've got the fleet covered by the RAC here at home. The RAC offer EU cover for your date specified trip or an upgrade throughout the year options.

I just would like to know from others what do you do or is there another way.

I've used the search function and there are some old threads, so thought I'd ask for the updated mindset.

Thank you Steve,

First check if anything is covered under your normal travel insurance.

We used to have a packaged bank account where the travel insurance also had car cover.  Great fun when on a Christmas market trip and the car broke down in Germany.  My OH's German is quite good for literature and music but rotten for talking to mechanics that don't do English!!

OH's latest vehicle is with Volvo and part of the annual service and MOT plans has travel covered as well so it will help us out in Europe too.  And apparently it covers the vehicle even if it's over 10 years old which many policies exclude.  When he first told me how much he was paying for MOT etc (£450ish) I thought that stupidly expensive but given it includes servicing and all the travel we do it's not bad in my opinion.

My tiddly VW doesn't do foreign - not big enough for the 2 of us and our luggage so I've just got the most basic of Green car emergency service on the off change I get stuck between here and work.

Another one who got EU Breakdown via package bank account.

Obviously it depends on how often you travel with a vehicle overseas and also if you'd make sure of the other benefits of a packaged account.

I use the packaged bank account cover too. Had to use it a couple of times and no issues

Ok thanks folks. I'll check the bank and see it's cheaper to upgrade with the monthly fee rather than buy additional cover. Our car doesn't go to the main dealer so wouldn't qualify for EU cover.
