Travel Insurance Cancellation Limit + Top up insurance

Options
I'd like clarification on cancellation limits and the effect on other parts of the insurance (Bank Packaged Travel insurance) please?

Assuming all parts of the insurance are suitable but the cancellation limit (5k per person) is too low for a specific trip, what happens if I travel?
Are all other parts of the insurance still valid but any cancellation would result in a settlement of 5k rather than the higher booked sum?
I assume this to be the case because top up cancellation cover can be bought to cover any differences and there would be little point in doing so if such a purchase rendered other parts of the original insurance null and void.

I'd appreciate any information or thoughts please

You ultimately need to read the policy terms and in particular look for anything about "averaging", which is the historic response to customers being underinsured.

In most policies there are no such terms and as such you are just capped at the PP limit and being over it isnt any form of breach of contract/ false disclosure which would enable them to decline or reduce any other claim. Hence as you say there is a small market for top-up or supplementary cover
