Vehicle Insurance Question....

Options
I have 2 vehicles on two separate insurance policies, which I'm happy with.

Vehicle 1
Registered and owned by me.
Used by only me.
Only me insured.
19 years no claims.

Vehicle 2.
Registered and owned by me.
Used by my wife and myself equally.
Me as main driver on policy,
Wife as additional driver.
5 years no claims.

I have been informed if I were to be involved in any accident on either vehicle, it would affect BOTH vehicles in the future as I would have to state that I have had a claim - whether fault or non-fault? Is that correct?
So if I had any claim on vehicle 1, I would also need to inform vehicle 2 insurer when it comes to renewal and state I have had a claim, even though it was on a separate policy and different vehicle?

I thought both policies were completely separate as they are from separate companies and policies start at different times of the year etc. So a claim on one policy wouldn't affect the other?

If this is the case is it better for me to keep Vehicle 1 insured as it is, and sacrifice the NCD from Vehicle 2 in order to place my wife as the main driver and me as secondary? She has no NCD (so the quote is around £100 higher) and I guess it would help her build a NCD history as well, but means if we have a claim on either vehicle, it would not affect the other policy at all?.......

If so, can I place her as main driver even though the car is registered and owned by me?

Thank you

You have to declare claims for you as an individual. It’s irrelevant which car, which policy, whether you are named or secondary driver. It would benefit your wife to have her own no claims anyway though 🤷🏼‍♀️

    There's are two separate issues.

Your no claims discount is a marketing gimmick which is specific to a policy - a claim on policy A will reduce your NCD for policy A, but not for policy B.

Separate to that however when you renew or take out a new policy your insurer will ask you "have you had any accidents, claims or convictions in the last 5 years" and obviously the truthful answer to that question would be "yes", whether or not the accident was in the particular car that you were trying to insure. That would have an effect on your premium, independently if any impact on your no claims discount.

Ah, so I may as well continue as I am and use the built NCD for now then. I was trying to figure out if there was a way to 'separate' them so if I had a claim on one it would affect the other, but seems there is no way round that regardless.
    Thanks for the clarification!

You are required to declare your driving and insurance history on each policy which you are covered for, this is independent of your NCD. So were you to hire a vehicle and crash it then neither existing policies NCD would be impacted as you didnt claim off of this insurance but you would need to declare that you've had an accident on both policies.

Were you to have an accident that may be the time to decide if you want to continue using vehicle 2 or not. That said insured & spouse used to be cheaper to insurer than insured only driver policies and therefore its not a guarantee that one incident, especially if it were non-fault, would actually make the policy more expensive than continuing as you are.
