Santander switch reward

After completing the switch to Santander I contacted them to check that I was doing everything I needed to get the £180 switch reward. Only to find out I'm not eligible because of an "inactive" Santander account from 2001! This was an old Abbey National account. I'm fuming, but have learnt my lesson to make sure I properly close accounts in future.
