I'm sure there is lots of advice on this somewhere on this site but I can't find it....

I have just bought a new car and now need to sell my old one privately.. it's probably worth about £500 but runs fine & has a bit of tax & MOT left. Where's the best & most successful (&cheap!) place to sell it do you think? I live in Manchester. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I used a web site called something like 'webuyanycar.com' or something along those lines. It was fine - they offered me money, I haggled a little, we agreed, he came and collected the car and paid cash. If mine had been in better nick so that I could have driven it there myself, he would have given me more money. It's worth looking into as you're not committing yourself to anything. Otherwise, put an ad in the local paper, or a card in a local shop/supermarket. It depends how much effort you're prepared to go to I suppose in dealing with callers, test drives, etc. etc. I didn't think it was worth it for my old nail, but yours is worth a bit more, so it may be worth it for you.

Be wary of buyer scams though. Fake cheques and bankers drafts. Also, the more advanced scams. Usually someone claims to be abroad/on holiday and pays for the car with a cheque with a little extra money asking you to ship the car, they ask you to send back any left over money which is quite abit of money. Later the cheque you cashed in bounces despite the money clearing into your account, and you're left out of pocket. Being the internet, adverts are available to anyone to view, including scammers.

Also if your car is anything special, import, rare, sought after etc, try owner's forums - although some charge an extra registration fee to allow you to advertise.

I agree - I insisted on having the cash in my sticky little hand before filling out the log book and handing it and the keys over.

  • Do not waste your time with these people. (webuyanycar.com) They give you a tempting offer on the internet then you make an appointment to visit there offices. So you drive for an hour to meet up with a rather down market ex bouncer type who says they don’t want your car as its not fitted with something or other. But would buy it for £1500 less.
Don’t waste your petrol and time.
