You'd think this would be easy but no. I went to the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and used their "find an engineer" function. There is apparently no engineer firms within 100 miles of my postcode (Dorset). I called them because I didn't think this could be right and the person on the phone says it is. I've used BARK to look and they've only found one firm near me.

You might get a better response on the building/property forum. It's not really anything to do with ISAs
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

What kind of job is it?  These days a lot of straightforward jobs are done without the SE ever going near the site - they'll potentially work from just plans and photos.

If the job is larger/more expensive then paying for travel time for a site visit might be VfM.

Did you click on Find an Engineer, then on the right, click on Find an Individual who is a member (or words to that effect).  Type Dorset in the Where field.  There are 30 odd in Dorset.

As above, it does depend on what you want doing?

    How big a job, RedPen?
Does it need an archi? Building Control (I guess it must!)?
SIL had a wee job - knock through wall - and a small works cert needed from Build Control. The BCO came out, confirmed it needed an SE to spec a lintel, so I asked if he could recommend one.
"Oh, I can't do that, sorry. But I know of a couple..."
For a larger job, our archi used hers.

I had done what you suggested but this did not find engineers near me, it did find an engineer over 100 miles away and the rest are from Pakistan, India etc.

I'm concerned about cracks appearing in the house. I'd like an engineer to put my mind at ease or tell me what I should do.

@Section62 and @WIAWSNB I'm not at the stage of builder or architects this is for expert advice regarding cracks in the house.

    A 'surveyor', then?
No idea what level of quads are required, but I'd have thought the type used for a higher-level house purchase survey?

Assuming you have buidlings insurance then approach the insurer first. They will likely appoint someone and if work is needed this starts the claim process
