    I think I'd honestly rather chance no alarm than a teenager staying in the house. 
    Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.

    If mine are typical, today's teenagers aren't like they were in your (or my) day.
    They'd rather stay indoors with their virtual friends and only go out if there's no other option.

    I think going to the current insurer might trigger them cancelling the policy, which would be really bad for trying to get an annual replacement? 
    Seems unlikely. It would be unreasonable to cancel your policy outright just because your alarm has a fault that you are working to get fixed - that must happen to most people with an alarm at one time or another. At worst they'd tell you that there's no cover for burglary while the house is unoccupied until the alarm is working again - which is pretty much where you are already.
