Private plate car insurance - haven't purchased the car yet

Options
Hi all,

Hopefully a quick simple query.. A car I'm about to purchase currently has a private reg, I want to insure it in readiness for collecting it at the weekend..

Would I be OK to insure it now under the private plate and then change the reg with the insurer once I've collected it and the plate has been unregistered against the car..?

How many days does it take to update with the insurers and DVLA DB once the current owner has unregistered the plate..?

TIA.

Buyer should remove plate before sale & have the new V5 with the correct reg on it.

Leaving plate on car after sale, makes plate yours.

If they put plate on retention online, then new V5 takes less than a week.

You do not want to be insuring car before you pick it up.

If it has a private plate on it now, then odds on it will already have another reg assigned to it, or when they put their plate on retention. They will get a new reg no produces, so they can update their insurance & get a new V5
make them pay for new plates & any admin for the change.
That is their responsibility if they want to keep the plate.

You need to wait until they have the V5 with the original reg - you won't be able to tax it until you have that, they should already have that in progress.

Speak to your insurer, they should be OK with it.
Give them the reg now so they have the car details
They can then issue  a new certificate when the private reg is taken off
Its fairly straight forward and i wouldn't expect them to charge any admin for it.

Yes you can insure now and then tell your insurer when you get your age related plate but there maybe a fee from your insurer.
Changing the plate online is instant and you will get the new log book within a week

Thanks all, the reg has been changed online now 👍 so all should be good to collect at the weekend
