Roof Replacement SQM question

Hello All, I am budgeting the roof replacement cost my home. I have seen various prices online, I have a silly question about the SQM reference which I found everywhere. Could someone please clarify if the SQM reference is for the Area of the Roof or the SQM tiles installed? To add more info, one SQM area of roof can have 2 SQM area tiles installed. Thanks in advance.

Isn't this just the area of the roof in square meters? The area of the roof itself, not the horizontal area that it covers on the house, as that wouldn't take into account the slope of the roof which would vary. I'm not sure I understand the question really.0

They don't put the slates side by side and work out that around 5 or 6 24x12 slates will cover a square metre, when in reality you need over double that on the roof.1 -
Thanks for your response, Much appreciated.0
