Can a landlord evict a long term tenant to join this new scheme?. I was speaking to someone today who said she had received 8 weeks notice to leave the property she has been in for 18 years. The agent has said that the house is not going up for sale but that the landlord is going to house asylum seekers under the Government scheme.
They were served a section 21, which appears to be valid, 6 weeks ago

I can't see this thread lasting long....

...but AIUI section 21s haven't been banned yet.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

If the notice is valid then it's valid. Irrelevant what the landlord's plans are.

Once her term of contract is over, of course he can evict her at the moment. Check validity of the S21 in more detail - there is another link but this will help explain the details https://nearlylegal.co.uk/section-21-flowchart/

Political headwinds might see the scheme scrapped in future, risky for the landlord to evict a long term tenant IMO.

As an aside, the scheme involves a landlord giving Serco a 5 year tenancy on their property. Serco can use the property to house whoever they choose.

I'm a bit surprised that a landlord is evicting a (presumably good) long-term tenant, to go for an untested scheme like this.

Unless perhaps Serco / the Home Office are offering rents that way above the market rate, because they will still be cheaper than using hotel rooms.

(Or unless the current tenant has been demanding and/or difficult, and the landlord is hoping the scheme will offer them an easier life.)

Seems similar to the landlords in Cornwall turfing out long term tenants to do holiday lets in the post covid boom. There'll be money in it somewhere...

I'd heard anecdotally that it was for up to 30% premium!     Kerching!!!!! :o

For sure the future of the scheme is uncertain, but once you have signed up a 5 year agreement you have it. 30% higher rent guaranteed for 5 years and serco do all the maintenance  and compliance. It’s designed to attract landlords, that’s why the price is so attractive.

Yes, I would think a few stories in the Daily Mail etc. of pensioners being evicted so their rental home can be used for asylum seekers, would mean a quick U turn.

I think there's also a property group which are buying up properties to let under this scheme.  I wonder how deep their pockets are?

Pressure on housing will only increase 😞.  Rents will only go one way.
