So, you sign up to Our Time, an online dating site for older people, owned by the Match Group. You pay for your membership period, and as there is an automatic renewal when your card will be charged again, you make a note of the expiry date and mark it in your calendar. When the time comes, you cancel your account, just before the automatic renewal. You then discover that the money for an auto-renewal has already been taken from your bank. You contact them (with some difficulty as they do rather hide their email address, and don't give a phone number) and they tell you if you want to cancel, you must do so at least 48 HOURS BEFORE your current deal expires. It's in the smallprint, you see. There is no excuse for this. It doesn't take 48 hours to delete an online profile. Disgraceful.

Just one of the many problems with Our Time!0

I’ve never tried a dating agency but when I lived in London pre internet I joined an over 40s singles club. They arranged a big Christmas party on the Isle of Wight. It was a roaring success. I met quite a nice man but we didn’t swap details. A few weeks later the bod in charge of the singles club phoned me to ask if he could give my phone number to this man. I agreed and he phoned and we arranged to meet. 6 weeks later we got engaged
Nearly 30 years later we’re still engaged1 -

How far in advance is “just before”?0 -
If I remember rightly, I cancelled a couple of weeks before renewal. Then I was given lots of options and discounts to stay with Our Time. When you don't renew you revert to the free version, which seems to mean that your profile is still visible. One of the problems I found is that profiles were shown which were no longer active. This meant that if you contacted someone they wouldn't reply because they were no longer using the site. That's how it seemed to me anyway.0

Nearly 30 years later we’re still engaged. We’ve had some lovely short breaks on the I of W since. I went there as a child on school outings, we lived in Southampton so it was just a short trip down Southampton Water.
