Hi everyone,
As a family this will be our first foray into benefits so would be really grateful for some assistance with it.
My widower dad is 77 and in February had an operation to remove a tumour from his spine. He is now paraplegic and double incontinent as a result. He came out of NHS spinal rehab a couple of weeks ago and has chosen to go into a care home as he isn't confident to live independently in the short to medium term.
He is paying privately for the care home fees at £2k per week.
He has a state pension which is about £14k pa due to being topped up as a result of my mum (his wife) passing away in 2009.
He has a private pension income of about £400 a month via an annuity.
He has no other income, but has savings/investments of c£400k and his house is worth £1.4m which is in the process of being sold (completion date penned for mid-September) as it is no longer suitable for him to live in.
He expects to leave the care home in around 6 months once he is confident about living semi-independently. But will likely need carers to visit a few times a day to assist him with housework and personal hygiene.
I'd be really grateful if someone could guide me on what, if any benefits he is entitled to. I've tried looking on the various government websites but it's a real midfield.
Many thanks.

I think the only obvious one is attendance allowance.0

Attendance allowance is the only non-means tested benefit for someone of his age.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Has your father been assessed for NHS continuing healthcare?0

Thanks very much for your replies. I'll look into both of those.
Regarding the continuing healthcare, I don’t think he's been assessed, but will check with the spinal rehab hospital in case they assessed him just before discharge.0 -
Just Attendance Allowance if self funding. NHS continuing health care is very difficult to get awarded unless he needs specialised Nursing care rather than basic care.2
