Extending travel insurance query

Hi all,
We are travelling to the US soon and have annual travel insurance taken last year.
The issue is, it will expire a couple of days before our return and we don't want to risk being without, just in case.
What is the best way to deal with his 2 day gap? Will it be ok to take a new policy starting on the date our current one is expiring? Will a policy be valid if we are abroad when it starts?
Any advice appreciated

If you want to shop around, which includes cancelling the renewal and buying again from the same company, then its unlikely you would have any cover for the trip and so would need the new policy to start before you go on the trip.1 -

Renewing your existing policy is the simplest way. If the renewal price isn't competitive then starting a new annual policy with a different company is an option, but it would need to start on/ahead of your departure date.If you aren't planning further travel, a single trip policy might be simpler and cheaper.
