AMEX Gold card renewal or downgrade?

Hi there,
I have taken out an Amex Gold card last year in July and in a month the renewal would be up, which would cost me £195 to have it for another year. As great as the benefits are, the price is not worth it for me to extend it's term as I have only made limited use of the offers.
I am not sure yet, if I downgrade to a free Amex so I don't have to convert my points yet or if I give it up.
My partner has through my card agreement a partner card and I was wondering if it would be possible to benefit from a referral offer if I would refer my partner? My partner would technically be a new customer. Does anybody know if that would work?
Amex sent me an email with an attractive referral offer so would be a great opportunity to grab a decent amount of extra points.

Yes, the second card on your account won't affect your partner's eligibility.I was in your position last year; my partner doesn't earn enough to qualify for an AmEx card, but I downgraded to the blue Rewards card and kept all my points that way.N. Two separate issues:
1. It is certainly possible to get a free Amex and so keep the reward points.
2. Yes, you can refer your partner and benefit from the referral bonus.0 -
They'll be considered a new customer for any points but if they already have an AmEx log in (Amex are one of the only ones that allow secondary cardholders to have their own logins) they will see both their secondary card on your account and their own card within the same space.pecunianonolet said:My partner has through my card agreement a partner card and I was wondering if it would be possible to benefit from a referral offer if I would refer my partner? Note however that what you get out of the Refer a Friend depends on what card you have so you will get more bonus points if this is done as a Gold customer than if you do it after the downgrade.0 -
Thanks all, that sounds great and we will consider the refer a friend option of offer.0

Aside of the referal offer, which we have not taken up yet, I have been offered by Amex to renew for the £195 fee and get 12000 points if I spend £1000 in the first 3 months or downgrade to the free Rewards credit card.
last year I haven't used the free lounge visits the card came with as I either had flight times where the lounges were not open or I had lounge access already included when flying business class for work. I will be definetly able to use up the lounge passes in the remainer of 2025.
The Deliveroo rebate the Gold card comes with I have only used twice. We don't usually order takeways, only use that in emergencies.
I also have the free barclays Avios card, also offering 1 point per £ spent.
Not sure if the fee justifies a renewal or not.
