    Consumer retail banking is generally free, commercial retail banking a lot less so.

    Banks are businesses and need to make profits to survive.  Products which are in low demand and produce little income are of no value to them will eventually be cut.  Look at it from the reverse angle?  If you find a bank which will offer better service, higher interest etc and you decide to move your account, would your current bank be within their rights to complain about erosion of trust etc?
