Good morning, Can anyone let me know if you have to give all your bank details including the 3 digit code on the back of your bank card and all details on the bank card when paying for a direct debit and to set up direct debits monthly?
I would very much appreciated this question.
Thank you

If you're clearing the account instantly then this may require a debit card payment for which the expiry date on the card and the 3-digit security will be required. IIRC this is recorded as a "Cardholder Not Present" transaction

A direct debit instruction does not require the expiry date and code informstion as it is not a debit card transaction. All that is required is that the instruction-giver is authorised to give the instruction

Interesteingly, I am a charity trustee but do not have signing authority for the account. Despite this I have been able to set up and cancel direct debit mandates with utilities several times over the years.

    Regards

    Tet

To answer your question, no, details of a debit card are not needed to set up a DD, but it can be asked for as additional up-front verification.

It's used to verify that you are the actual owner of the bank account that you are setting up the DD on, and that the account is a current account.

Otherwise the details that you have entered for the account details might not fail DD collection until the payment date, even if a CoP check has verified that the account exists.

It used to be standard way of verifying account details quickly - to take a small charge on the account card.

For instance in mobile phone shops for them to often just reserve but not take a nominal payment on the presented card - say a £1 - as a quick way of validating things.

It might be something similar - but once the DD is set-up - then no - it will run until they cancel it or you do - unless you swtich accounts.

But for instance I still pay my ISP by repeat card debit rather than DD - and so every so often - as cards expire - I have to reenter - often just the expiry date and 3 digit security code - they remember the 16 digit code as a rule - but I can edit if I want to change cards.  And in that case they take the current months payment immediately to verify it.

They do however make it more difficult - and nag about changing to DD before getting to the credit card method.
