VOIP

Options
We are currently with EE for broadband and landline. Due to a sudden change in our circumstances that service will end next week. We are out off timed contract and have not changed to digital voice. We still have very old BB router.
We wish to keep our landline number.

We do now have a 5g vodaphone gigacube router as we had terrible connection speed on EE and couldnt do gaming. When the vodaphone router was brought they indicated they could transfer the home phone oover.we couldnt do this as our EE and vodaphone services were under different names. Does anyone know the vodaphone costs for adding the landline to them and any call costs.
Im sure ive read that for VOIP i could change our landline number to someone like Andrews and Arnold. Does anyone know if there service would work with the Vodaphone gigacube. What equipment would we need. I read something about needing an ATA adaptor.
We need to sort this in the next week as our EE line will be cut off. We dont want to loose the landline number as we use it in connection with business.

Yes, it is entirely possible to port your landline number to a VoIP (Voice over IP) provider such as Andrews & Arnold (A&A), Sipgate, or Voipfone, and use it over your Gigacube connection.

TBH this is a classic topic to use an AI like ChatGPT to help you

And you are technically competent to do this? Not intending to be insulting but if the number is essential for business can you afford

    To take the risk.

We moved from Virgin to Vodafone and needed a landline whilst retaining our number. The criteria was the origin of the number. Was it an original BT number or in the case of Virgin an NTL number. Original BT numbers can be ported but not the digital ones. Who is going to provide the internet? Not all providers can do it.

Thankyou i dont have AI services but i will look elsewhere for answers. There is so much wrong information out there that i was trying to get advice from people that have changed already.

It was orginally a BT number just transfered to EE. We cant get virgin, you fibre or gigaclear services.
I should clarify. Its going to be more for residential use. The business side of it is small. But we would rather use a landline number than a mobile.

Make sure you move the number asap as if "the service ends next week" the number will be lost forever - been there got the T shirt!

I gave A&A a phone today. Lady was very helpful. Call charge prices seemed good. But the cost if the ATA adaptor was quite a bit. They said i could buy one online cheaper but id need to configure it myself.
So now thinking for the costs is it really worth keeping the landline vs number of calls/people that have the landline number.

Ive just seen another company that says you can port your landline to a mobile. They call themselves Air Landline. Has anyone any experience of them please.
Other things ive read online say its not possible to port a landline to a mobile so im confused.

We moved from Virgin to Vodafone and one reason was that I could port my landline over. It costs me £10 per month with 24/7 calls.

A landline is essential as my wife has Alzheimer’s so switching to a Mobile is not an option I also have a small consultancy business so it would inconvenience clients.

As JB says  if "the service ends next week" the number will be lost forever

Have a look at Vonage home, it was straightforward to port my number from BT to Vonage, costs reasonable starting at £6.99 per month including free minutes. ATA adapter is included in the price.

I looked at switching my landline number from Plusnet to A & A recently when I upgraded to full fibre (as PN aren't offering phone with full fibre) .
After working out the costs, decided to let the landline number go as we have had only a couple of genuine calls on the landline in the last 6 months - but literally dozens of spam calls!
I've let everyone I could think of ,know our mobile numbers .and made sure that the landline number was removed from every important financial (and other) website that we could plus people like the dentist and Drs surgery.

I have just ported my landline from Plusnet to A&A, very smooth change over, If you don't need extension phone connections in the house, then a second hand VOIP phone (ebay) - plugs into network socket, plenty of help on net, basically about 3/4 settings to be entered in to phone for A&A, only costs less than £2 per month for the line rental.  I use it for incoming calls, outgoing calls use my mobile allowance. For my now defunct broadband connection (Old adsl), I use mobile phone modem.

If you don't want to actually set up a VOIP phone (which can also be a softphone on a computer or an app on Android/IOS then you can port the number to A&A. With no phone connected, calls will go to voicemail and if the caller leaves a message it will be emailed to you.
Or you can just have it give out a 'please call our mobile on ...' announcement and not take messages.
