This is how Ebay treats a customer of 22 years.

This is how eBay treat a customer of 22 years with an excellent feedback record covering 1369 items.

Two weeks ago my eBay account was hacked. It took about four days to get my account back from eBay. I then realised the hacker had converted my account to a business account and sold a bogus item for over £5200 to a guy in Singapore who was messaging me asking where his book was. After a few long calls to eBay they finally accepted it was not me who had sold the book and refunded the guy in Singapore although eBay was still threatening to take the money out of my account saying I owed it to them. This has gone on for many days and phone calls, twice I waited over an hour and then got cut off. Finally, after about eleven days they removed the charge of about £4300 off my account but told me they could not revert my account back to a personal account, it would have to remain a business account and from now on I would have to pay business charges for selling. As if that wasn't bad enough I have just recieved this from them:

Hello malcolm.

Your eBay account has been suspended because recent account activity has raised security concerns. We've taken this precaution to protect our members while we make sure that the activity doesn't cause harm--even unintentionally--to the eBay community.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use eBay in any way. This includes using another existing account or registering a new account.

Any outstanding fees will be due immediately, and any amounts that you haven't previously disputed will be charged to the billing method currently on file.

We appreciate your understanding.

Thanks,

eBay

My crime? Getting hacked. I called them, they said they cannot say why they closed my account after 22 years or why I was the one being treated as the criminal. Basically they can do what they want and it's just tough... bye bye.

I had about 100 items for sale, all that time putting them on ebay was a total waste of my time, and believe it or not they still owe me about £15 for sales!

There are no words really, THAT is how eBay treats it's loyal customers.

    Were you phished?
eBay have lost £5200 so they are quite rightly more cautious now about your online activity.
How are you selling 100 items one a personal account?

Private accounts still have 300 free listings per month, IIRC.

I don't see any issue with 100 items on a private account, I suspect many people, perhaps older ones like me could easily find 100 in a single hour going through cupboards or boxes in loft. Personally for me it isn't quantity that's the issue it's the 'private' sellers who mention their business model in the description and who sell a  widget in every colour and suggest if they are out of stock of something to contact them and they'll buy more stock to upload.

Why would somebody hack a random Ebay account to list a rare £5,000 plus book and manage to sell it. Suspect there's far more to this story.

I'd be interested in how the hack happened- in case there is an issue somewhere. 2FA should be in place - and there's no reports on other groups of a current major issue.

The last couple of 'hack' stories I've seen ended up being people who knew the victim or used a shared PC or device- rather than a professional hacker bypassing the system. I do try and keep ahead of issues as no company is entirely safe (as M and S have found out) and if needs be pre warned means a user can at least try and protect themselves.

Isn't that precisely what a hacker might do?

Why have you asked this question?
Do you think there's something odd about a private seller listing a lot of items?
    Or 'iffy'?

The ability to bypass (or alternatively intercept) 2FA has been commonplace for years, using cheaply available tools & skills that are easily prevalent, if you know where to look. The book 'Future Crimes' mentioned it happening almost a decade ago. Hackers are generally exceptionally skilled people, I'm sure their skills will be even more enhanced as the years have gone on.
