Sons Student maintenance grant and the effect on my Universal credit.

Hello there,

Ive actually asked this question on here before and someone very helpful answered but I'm double checking as Ive been told the opposite. I claim Universal credit, I also claim PIP and have a doctors fit note to say that my max hours are 20 a week. Universal credit are ok with this as long as I keep providing them with a fit note, they have said my minimum income floor will be 20 hours a week x the national minimum wage. They have not asked me to have a Work Capability Assessment. My son is leaving college at the end of the month and I understand I will no longer receive child benefit or the child element of universal credit. He starts University full time in September and will be receiving a maintenance loan as I am on a low wage, he will be staying at home for the first couple of years, I was told that his loan will not affect my Universal credit payment but I have since been told that it most definitely will. has anyone else been in this situation and if so did your child student loan make a big dent in what you were awarded? Also, I have a work allowance, I have been told this may end when my child leaves College but Ive also been told it will continue because I only have to work 20 hours a week? I've tried to get information online and from citizens advice etc but no one has a clue! I'm also worried all this will cause my transitional protection to end. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Your sons income is not used in the calculation of your benefits. You can also claim single occupancy on council tax also because students are not liable to pay council tax.

You won't have a work allowance once your son is no longer classed as your dependent child, unless you have a Work Capability Assessment and are found to have LCW or LCWRA.

(Usually people can't be referred for a WCA if they are earning above 16xNMW/week, but you would be able to as you claim PIP.)
