Return trip must be booked before leaving

Options
I have an Aviva policy through Nationwide flexplus account and it says:

• All persons insured under this policy must have their main home address in the UK, be
living in the UK for more than 6 months a year, and be registered with a doctor in the UK.
• Cover is for the account holder and their partner living at the same address. The account
holder's partner can travel independently.
• Dependent children (including step and foster children) are covered if they are under 23
years of age when the trip starts. Dependent children can travel independently.
• The standard trip duration is a maximum of 31 days (unless a longer trip upgrade has
been purchased).
• Winter sports are covered up to a maximum of 31 days per trip.
Trips must start and end in the UK and the return journey must have been booked before
leaving home.

I phoned Aviva up about this and the rep was adamant that it only applied to when the trip was longer than 31 days but that's not how it reads to me. I have a 3 week trip coming up which i want to be flexible with the last day but this has me unsure whether I should fix the date. Has anyone dealt with this before?

It's basically how you substantiate that it was to be a trip under 31 days is by having transport booked to bring you back to the UK. I'd agree that the advisor was wrong; obviously you can change your return date whilst away as long as the total duration remains under 31 days.

If you have a return ticket and it's flexible I can see no reason for it not being covered if it's a annual policy because there is no requirement to enter dates of travel.
A problem  would arise   if you booked the return and paid for it whilst abroad you would be deemed to have commenced you travel outside the UK for the return journey
