Is there an actual advantage to air frying or are we just being sold a pup?

I found it really strange that Pukka Pies are now including air fryer cooking times, and cite EXACTLY the same time as the conventional fan oven times.
Maybe because we're now used to seeing air fryer times on food packaging which as a rule of thumb is 2/3 of the normal cooking time, so this emphasises that the product needs that amount of time to be fully cooked in air fryer, not the usual 2/3 give or take a few minutes that might be used in the absence of a specific air fryer cooking time.

Recently there was a programme on the BBC - The Secret Genius of Modern life - the air fryer.

Hannah Fry (no pun intended) discusses how air fryers work and their development. I found it a fascinating programme.  If memory serves, it is quicker because it is smaller. As an aside this does make me reconsider getting one of those stand-alone combi microwave/air fryer devices.
    Anyway here is a link:
One of the points made in that programme was that the airflow plays a major part in cooking the contents evenly to avoid a mix of burnt and uncooked food emerging. These things are a bit more than small scale fan ovens.
