Travelling to NYC want to see a broadway show

We (two adults, three teens) are off to New York in July and would love to see a show on Broadway. The tickets are too pricey to buy before we go and I just wondered if anyone had any experience of buying from the tickets offices on the day of the show? In particular, getting cheaper tickets for five people seated together. We’re not too bothered what we see which I’m hoping will help our chances!

Not sure if it's what you meant by "buying from the tickets offices" but the TKTS outlet on Times Square specialises in on the day offers:

As above, TKTS is the way to go. Be prepared to split your party, maybe a three and a two with some rotation at the interval. Two of us once got into Phantom after several days of trying by having the end seats on two different rows that were only two rows apart.0

Trying to get 5 seats together at short notice is asking a lot. As has been said, I think you need to expect to have to split the group.0

If memory serves, there is one day in the week when there are no shows, in order to give the performers a day off.I think it was Tuesday when we visited back in 2010.0

We have managed it with 4 people before but direct from the booking office, if you are flexible about which show you can just try the box offices on your first dayTotally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0
