Two car insurance policies on one car by two different people in the same household?

Options
Hi, I was hoping you can provide some guidance?

Can a car be insured on two insurance policies by two different people in the same household?

I will explain further.

My wife has a Vauxhall Corsa with a fully comprehensive insurance policy which she has had for years. She recently inherited a Ford Focus and also has a separate fully comprehensive policy on this car but she does not drive it. She tried to ensure our 19 year old Son (he passed his driving test last February) on the Ford Focus. However, the cost was two high. When my Son did a quote for him to be insured (fully comprehensive) on the Ford Focus by himself as the main driver, the cost was cheaper. However, this means there will be two separate fully comprehensive insurance policies on the Ford Focus by two different persons. Is this legal to do? We just want to ensure we are not breaking the law.

If she doesnt drive it why doesnt she just cancel the policy given your son will have cover on it?

It is not illegal to have two insurances on one car but it can cause problems in the event of a claim, particularly if it's an event where neither driver is in control of the vehicle. As such its highly discouraged

It is legal but highly inadvisable. If there was an accident then both the insurance companies have to work together, split any costs, both policy holders would have a claim against their names etc.

Your wife just needs to cancel the policy on the car on the date your son's policy starts. She will be charged an admin fee, but get the rest of her policy cost refunded pro-rata for time remaining.

Has your son tried insuring the Focus in his name with your wife as a named driver? That usually brings the price down a bit and still allows her to drive it if necessary.

Thanks so much for the suggestion chrisw! This made a big difference to the price.

An insurer should not allow one vehicle to be insured more than once.
It could lead to fraud, you can only claim for the one loss.
Number of Drivers does not matter.
