Why does my new toilet smell?

Hi - hoping someone can provide some advice....
Back in January we had a water leak underneath our downstairs toilet and a company came to rip out the toilet/dig down and stop the leak. The toilet was a wall hung WC with the cistern behind some boxing. At the time, the company advised us to fit a back-to-wall toilet, as it would be easier to remove if ever the leak came back.
After waiting a few months for everything to dry, another builder came to fit the new toilet. Since day 1, there has been a faint but lingering smell of sewage in the toilet. The builder gave us some acid to clear the pipes but isn't really interested in coming back to address the issue because the cistern and connections are all behind boxing which would need to be ripped out/reinstated.
Any ideas what is causing this? And how I can get this fixed properly? New user so cannot post pictures/links.

Could be the joint behind the toilet pan and the sewage pipe is leaking ,only way to tell is a physical inspection ,is your toilet attached to a vanity unit ? you might have to remove a couple of panels to inspect.1

As suggested, the most likely culprit is a gap in the pan connector. The smell would be strongest around and gaps in the boxing.
No real choice but removing the panels to remedy.0
