Hello you wise lot !

I have an odd question and just wondering if anyone could offer advice if I have any recourse again a garage.

I purchased a used vehicle at the start of May 2025, the vehicle in question was an ex motorbiltly car so had a disabled class on the tax , the salesman advised because of this he had to send some forms off via the post office as to change the tax class could not be done online.

A day later the salesman sent me proof of postage and sent the tax DD form off and then a couple of weeks later the first DD payment came out for the vehicle tax all good ! .

I was still awaiting the log book at the end of may so I checked the car online and it stated last logbook update 28th may , car tax expired 7th may 2025........

I spoke with the DVLA to question this ,who stated the dealer made the mistake with the V5 document and the green new keeper slip so they ( dvla) cancelled the road tax.... so my car is now untaxed,  I cannot set up a direct debit without the V5 which im waiting for my only option is to tax the car for 6 or 12 months upfront ...... why should I fork out 6 months tax upfront when its down to the garage I am in this mess .....

I have contacted the garage to which no response has been received...

Do I have any recourse or is it a case of suck it up and pay

If you want to drive you will need to tax it.

You can thespeak to the dealer and ask him to cover your losses and £20 for goodwill.

You will actually save money by paying 12 months.

At the end of the day, you bought a car without a valid V5 - and could/should have adjusted the offer price at that point. I think its on you to deal with this quirk of admin now. You could have waited and allowed the dealer to sort it all out before you took delivery after all (or bought a car with a valid V5).

    Recourse for what?

Assuming a post-2017 car without the £40k+ premium payable, then one year's VED costs...
£195 if paid in one go
£204.75 if paid by monthly DD

They have saved you a tenner over the course of the year, indirectly.

There's a strong argument that good customer service should bring a forthright apology, and perhaps a goodwill gesture of some kind for the inconvenience - but you have suffered no loss. Quite the opposite.

It's hardly a mess.  You were going to pay it anyway.
