Mobile or Land Line

I curently have a package with Virgin for Telephone and TV which includes Sportspack. At the moment I do not own a mobile phone - one of the few in this world! At the moment I pay £11 per month for my line rental and calls on top which very rarely come to more than £2.50 per month as I let people ring me and make as many calls as I can from work as I am trying to pay off long standing debts, I also get the usual low rates that Virgin offer for Virgin cable to Virgin cable phones etc. What I was wondering is does anyone think it would be cheaper for me to have a mobile pay as you go phone rather than paying the renal of £11 every month. Because I haven't had a mobile phone for such a long time I'm afraid my knowledge of such things is very much out of touch now. Hope someone can give me some constructive help with this. I have tried to read up about it but unfortunately everything seems above my head - I'm not very technically minded! Thanks for any help.

Hi despondent, If you only have a mobile and no land line you may find you lose some friends! The reason is that it is much more expensive to ring a mobile than a land line, so all you are doing is passing your costs on to other people. also pay as you go phones are generally expensive to make outgoing calls on.0 -
I am planning to temporarily end my mobile contract and use PAYG instead for a while too, simply to cut costs... sometimes you may not add £10 credit for up to 2 months! Can be a huge saving but as notbritishgas said, you could lose a lot of friends as many hesitate before calling a mobile and those that do call are concious of the call duration and tend to keep things short!
Anyway, if you go to PAYG the o2 sim is good, 300 free texts a month!0 -
Thanks for the advice, maybe I should stick to the landline after all.0

That is why it is not a good idea to have an answer machine or to use 1571 - if people wish to speak to me THEY can pay for the call!
In truth, they pay anyway with an answering service. If the line is busy or engaged, the calls goes to the answer service - the caller pays. If there is no answer service, the caller gets engaged or no answer, isn't charged and tries again later.0 -
