Would you be better off without it, but with however much you spent on extra NI years in the bank?
My sister was a head teacher who "knew that she had been shafted by the system because she had always been shafted by the system" and had to pay 2 years voluntary NI. The reason why she knew this was that my brother in law didn't have to pay 2 years voluntary because he already had a full pension. But of course he didn't have much by the way of company pension.
It took some doing but I eventually managed to explain how if anyone had been shafted by the new rules it was her husband and not her. Fortunately she is a reasonable, intelligent person and after a lot of explanation she got there. Now she is chuffed to bits and quite rightly considers the voluntary NI to be the best money she has ever spent. Unfortunately there are people who once they have taken a particular stance on an issue aren't able or willing to take such a reasonable stance.1 -

Have a lovely weekend.I was always contracted out, chose to make up 6 years but still couldn’t make the full pension. However I’m much better off than I would have been had I not contracted out and was able to get my contracted out pension 6 years before I would get my state pension. I’m far from alone and could have decided I was being ripped off with 47 years and no full pension but under the old system I’d be getting around £39pw less.2
