How do I see confirmation codes on my smartphone ?

The apps on my phone frequently send "confirmation codes" to my smartphone - a Samsung Galaxy 5. How do I find these messages without exiting the app ?

    1,000 Posts Second Anniversary Name Dropper
    You should have an app switcher icon at the bottom of the screen  that lets you move between different apps/home screen.
